What makes cashmere so special and expensive?
Cashmere comes from the soft undercoat of cashmere goats, which is incredibly fine, lightweight, and rare. Each goat produces only a small amount annually. This scarcity, combined with the extensive hand-processing required to sort and clean the fibers, results in a premium material that offers exceptional softness and insulation.
How should I properly wash and care for my cashmere sweater?
We always recommend hand washing in cold water with a mild detergent specifically for wool or cashmere. Gently squeeze out water without wringing, lay the sweater flat on a towel to dry away from direct heat or sunlight, and never hang it, as this can cause stretching.
How can I tell if a cashmere sweater is of high quality?
High-quality cashmere is characterized by its long, resilient fibers (leading to less pilling), a dense and soft hand feel, and a significant yet lightweight warmth. A good test is to gently stretch the sweater; it should spring back to its original shape. Also, look for a high ply (like 2-ply) and a high percentage of pure cashmere.
Is cashmere suitable for wear in warmer seasons, or is it only for winter?
Cashmere is a temperature-regulating material. Its fine fibers trap air to provide warmth in cold weather but also wick away moisture, making it breathable enough for cool summer evenings or air-conditioned environments. Lightweight cashmere (lower gauge) is perfect for year-round layering.
Will my cashmere sweater pill? How can I manage it?
Some pilling is natural, especially early on, as shorter fibers work their way to the surface. It is a sign of softness, not poor quality. Pilling can be minimized by washing correctly (gentle hand wash, flat dry) and reduced by using a cashmere comb or fabric shaver to gently remove the pills.
